half stop drop. does that mean I'm only losing half stop in the flash as well or is that something totally different?

May be different. I did some tests with a milk bottle diffuser to see how much light was lost over straight flash and it turned out to be 1 and 1/2-3/4 stops IIRC. Don't bet the farm on that 1/2 stop.
