In Denmark, at least, all mercury, silver, lithium, rechargeable, etc. batteries
are meant to be delivered to special collection boxes - all photo shops have
just such a box. This includes all private users....

I think, as a non-commercial entity, you are permitted to just toss them in
your trash. As a 'normal' citizen, the expectation is that you're not
disposing of several pounds of the stuff.
