My son gave up on football ( Aussie rules) in grade three when they started to
learn how to tackle. When the tackling started he would be the one on the
outside waiting for the ball. HE enjoyed the ball skills but did not like the
physical stuff. Cricket has been his sport since then.
The thing that I like about the club where my son plays cricket is that the
emphasis is on participation NOT on winning. They play with modified rules to
ensure that all players get an equal opportunity. In the under 13 age group,
which is where my son played this year, each batsman has a maximum of 20 fair
balls. This does not count No-balls and wides. If he or she is dismissed
before the 20 is up so be it. This gives the bowlers a reward for their
effort. The bowlers bowl 2 overs of 6 fair balls, with a maximum of 8 balls.
Normally no-balls and wides would not be counted but at this age some bowlers
have trouble hitting the pitch and an over could be very long if using adult
rules. The bowler changes after the 2 overs until the batting side is all
out. If all bowlers have bowled their two overs the sequence starts again.
These rules ensure that all players get an equal turn both batting and
bowling. Also I find that the kids encourage the not so good players because
they know that they have to bat and bowl. In many competitions the poorer
players would not bowl and would bat last all the time. This encourages good
team spirit. Parents are required to do Duty 5 times in the season. This can
be Umpiring, Scoring, canteen or equipment. No role for Official Photographer
unfortunately.
OM content I think need another telephoto or zoom lens to photograph
this
well. The 500mm is too long most of the time. I have to bee to far back in
order for the players to nicely fill the frame. The 200 is short unless I can
sit on the boundary square of the wicket. The boundary at this level is
around 35 to 40 metres. I think 300 would be about right. The 500mm Tamron
is F8 which is ok, as the depth of field ( lack of ) can be a problem,
although it does allow the players to isolated from the background sometimes.
Yesterday I used an auto-focus p*****x to follow the action. I found
the
vagaries of the auto-focus irritating at times. However it was easier when
the ball and fielders came close to where I was sitting. Haven?t seen the
results from the p***x yet. I will develop the DELTA 3200 tonight. I have
not used this film before. Does anyone have any experience with it? Is it a
contrasty film! The subject matter is kids in cricket whites against a green
background. It was a bright sunny day, unlike the day before, which was dull
and overcast. That should help with contrast I hope.
It will be interesting to compare them against some of the photos in
today?s
paper of the final of the Interstate competition ( PURA cup). The pro?s get
much more practice at this than I do, and they must use much more film than I
can afford to. I am not sure if they are using motordrives to get sequences or
rely on anticipation and timing like I do.
