With an external power supply the high voltage invertor circuit
in the handle is completly bypassed via a diode network.
The circuit in the handle that is getting hot is not very complex but I
would guess the repair cost, unless you are electronics handy, would be too
high since the BG2 is inexpensive (~$80-100) used.
