Andrew,

I can see the logic of your comment but Olympus doesn't seem to be
consistent. Mirror lock-up (MLU) seems to be something that Oly plays
with when it feels like it. It seems strange that a maufacturer with
such a strong line of macro and other scientific photographic equipment
should take such a cavalier attitude towards MLU. It's definitely not a
trivial issue when using macro and very long telephoto lenses. Some of
Gary Reese's lens test results show marked differences, depending on
the MLU facilities of the cameras he used to conduct the tests.

Oly's logic behind whether to include MLU or not in the different
models escapes me. Looking at the "pro" or "system" bodies only:

M-1/OM-1(n): Mirror can be locked up manually but the mechanisms
to flip the mirror and to close down the lens
to working aperture still operate when the shutter
is fired. This doesn't do enough to kill vibration.

OM-2/OM-2n: No MLU or prefire.

OM-2S/OM-4(T)(Ti): Mirror and aperture pre-fire, combined with the
self-timer; this is subject to a 10 sec. delay.

OM-3(Ti): No MLU or prefire (also no self-timer). Maybe this
wasn't intended to be a "pro" model?

IMHO, the best arrangement would be mirror and aperture prefire as in
the OM-2S/OM-4, but able to be operated either independently of the
self-timer or with the self-timer, as desired.

Are you listening, Olympus? Maybe in the OM-5 . . . (hint, hint,
nudge, nudge, snap, snap, grin, grin, wink, wink, know what I mean?

[sigh]

Regards,
