I found a whole whack of 55mm ND0.9 (8x) filters on B&H's website. For
instance, the B+W #103 glass filter is being sold by B&H for $18.75 U.S.
Others in that range are special-order types, with extras like MRC
(Multi-Resistant Coating [some kind of anti-scratch coating, I assume]). Also
found a Hoya for $14.95, a Hoya HMC for $19.50, and a Tiffen (I assume
uncoated) for $10.95. All the usual suspects appear to be available on the
website.
Perhaps you mistakenly narrowed your search too soon. Sometimes, the filters
are mis-categorized by the data inputters (and therefore filtered out too soon
by relational expressions which are too narrow).
