[OM] OM-3 wind question

Subject: [OM] OM-3 wind question

I spoke with a friend today who owns an OM-4 and a very recently
acquired OM-3. He was anticipating having to shoot in the cold weather
and, not trusting the OM-4 to do its thing in the cold, he added an OM-3
to his kit.

Now he's perplexed. He took the OM-3 out in the cold weather and says
he encountered a problem with the wind mechanism "free-wheeling". That
is, he could keep on winding the film even though he hadn't fired the
shutter. At first he was concerned that he had torn the film sprockets
due to the cold but later on, after the camera had warmed a little it
began behaving normally. Also, after examination of the film, it was
clear that the sprockets were OK.

So, what was going on here? Why is this OM-3 misbehaving in the
environment it's supposed to be well suited to?
