Auto mode is aperture priority auto. You set the aperture on the lens, and
the camera will adjust the shutter speed accordingly, during exposure.

In program mode, set the lens to it's minimum aperture (usually f/16 or f/22)
and the camera will select a suitable aperture based on lighting conditions
and film speed. It then "fine-tunes" the shutter speed by measuring
off-the-curtain/film during exposure. If you don't set the aperture to
minimum, than the camera will not be able to stop the lens down further than
you have set it. For example, with a 50/1.8 if you set the aperture to f/8
the camera can only select apertures from f/1.8 to f/8 in the program mode.

Hope this helps more than it confuses,

Paul
