Many rangefinder and earlier SLR designs have a shutter speed ring around
the lens throat. I must admit I don't find it very ergonomic. The ones in
which the aperture and shutter speed are interconnected (often in LV
settings) can be a right pain Voigtlander Bessamatic is one of the worst
offenders. Most classic Retinas do too but it's little easier with the
milled wheel to get the settings you require. Overall I do prefer the
settings all to be on the top plate.
