All the modern wide angle hoods for the Leica M cameras are rectangular in shape. That includes the 21, 24, 28, & 35. Shades for the 50's and 90's are all circular.

My guess is that the 35-80/2.8 hood is tulip shaped because that's the only way that they could get the maximum shading for both ends of the focal length.

FYI, the hood for my late 28-105/2.8 Tamron was also tulip shaped. As are all the hoods for ~17-35 zooms for Nikon, Canon, etc.
