[OM] Manual reduction of flash output- dangerous?

Subject: [OM] Manual reduction of flash output- dangerous?

Just had one of those nasty thoughts: I have been happily reducing the
flash output from my flashes (ancient Vivitars, BTW) so I can get
precise ratios like 1/4 or 1/8 etc. by covering it with a fixed amount
of paper tissues and measuring the resulting output with a flashmeter.
Now, here's the nasty thought: the white tissues in front of the flash
are likely to reflect infra-red right back into the unit. Will this
cause overheating?
