There are some very compact, thin portable light tables selling for around $50-$75. The lighting is very evenly distributed and, as far as I can tell by eyeball, fairly neutral. But besides the cost they use AA batteries - I'd imagine they'd use up a lot of batteries. And using an adaptor would defeat the purpose.

So I use a portable light table that's not much larger - around 5"x7" - but thick enough to accomodate four C batteries. The batteries last quite a while but the single daylight-balanced fluorescent tube doesn't provide as even coverage as the more expensive compact units. OTOH, it cost just $14 at Sam's Club.

Comparing the two portable light tables, light from the flat units seem a bit more bluish while mine appears slightly warmer. This was compared to midday outdoor light.

I've also used it as a makeshift underlight source for macro work on custom jewelry made by my son-in-law. And I've used it as an even more makeshift transparency adaptor lighting source for my flatbed scanner.
