Finally, an issue I can address from experience . . . even if it's off topic

Simply put, there is no such thing as an "all season" tire. It's marketing
hype. That's why so many tires have an all seasons rating; most radials are
good enough. If you want traction in the snow, use snow tires. Check out
Consumer Reports, the car magazines, Tire Rack, etc. for hard data. Or come
for a ride with me sometime this Winter; I regularly pass 4x4's on all
seasons.

I'll wager Audi assumes that those who can afford their cars can afford a
second set of steel wheels and snow tires, if their winter environment
warrants them. That's what I've done ever since I moved into the Great Lakes
snow belt (and I drive RWD Volvos).

Softer compounds are normally found in high performance tires with high
speed ratings and very good temperature control. It's not the compound, but
the carcass construction, which is more expensive. Ford and Firestone were
an accident waiting top happen; inexpensive tires run well below their rated
pressure on heavy vehicles driven by people who are oblivious to tire
maintenance. Audi learned the hard way; folks don't want to hear that they
were responsible for running over their kids, even if they had their foot
firmly planted on the accelerator.

Bottom line - look at your tires, look at your spouse's tires, look at tires
on strangers' cars.

Frank, who knows his RF tire's about gone, and plans to put his snows on
early this year.

I think it keeps them from becoming a news story like Firestone has. All
weather tires have softer compounds and have trouble getting rid of
heat. It doesn't matter in snow or rain, but at speed on dry pavement it
is rather important.
