I agree with most of what you wrote, but I think that my ML270 has rack and pinion...

Good to hear that things have changed a bit since the '80s Porsches - 944s and 928s from that era didn't seem to be put together any better than a 'vette. Not bad, better than most, but way inferior to a Mercedes, which I'd still take over any car on the road for all around driving if I could afford one. Tougher than most trucks, excellent fit and finish, more than adequate power, with surprisingly good handling for a reciprocating ball steering mechanism. Cruising at 90 mph feels like 55. Driving over bombed out East Coast road craters feels like minor ripples. And I never got the looks of admiration driving anything else like I did with a Mercedes. Except maybe my Honda VT500.
