John,

You won't find one in your shoe - it's fingers that the creature is
fond of and the rhinozuikopod, as it is known, can even bite through
leaves. Erwin's photo of an attack on a human being is particularly
gruesome (even worse than the notorious anaconda pictures I've seen
elsewhere on the web). Once bitten, a rhinozuikopod vicitm develops a
serious and chronic mental illness, the mechanics of which are still a
mystery. In the early stages, the affliction usually manifest itself as
a morbid (but fully understandable) aversion to certain brands of
camera; it is known in the far east as Minikpencanophobia and, in
Europe, as Leitzeisskrankheit. In the more advanced stages, however,
the symptoms become far more severe and take on the form of an
all-consuming obsession to buy, own, collect and use only certain SLR
cameras and lenses of surpassing aesthetic and technical excellence,
that are smaller and better than they have any right to be. This
condition is called OMania. Medical science has admitted defeat:
immunisation is impossible and there is NO known cure.

Although Zuikoholics exhibit most of the symptoms of OManiacs, the
difference is that at least Zuikoholics get that way through their
culpable over-indulgence, whereas OManiacs are unsuspecting and
innocent victims. To quote His Worship the Lord Mayor of Medan, North
Sumatra: "I'd never even heard of ****ing OM before I got bitten by
that ****ing bug!" (it loses something in the translation).

And John, don't feel too smug about Sumatra being a long way away. The
Sumatra-Georgia tunnel was completed in spring this year - April 1
2000, to be precise. Don't be too surprised if you've never heard of
it: it has been shielded, deliberately, from publicity because of
embarrassment: the tunnel was supposed to surface in Georgia, southeast
Europe but, owing to series of administrative errors, it surfaced,
instead, in Georgia, USA. Now there'll be no stopping the spread of the
rhinozuikopod and OMania in the Land of the Free.

Regards,

Ray
