Simon E" <ruralwales@xxxxxxxxxxx> asks
"lens (on ebay ) thinking of two options:
>>1. put a decent bid in now and hope for the best"<<

Your best option, as with any auction bidding, you need to establish your
limit and stick to it, even if you miss this one, don't fret, another may
well come up, could even be cheaper.
eg I was outbid on a relatively rare camera that sold for $usa 450! That
bidder opted out and it reauctioned twice, at $195 and $150 in later
auctions, neither meeting reserve . Others meanwhile sold for $100 - 300.
I have since won another at $95! (fluke, for some reason no-one else bid).

>>2. make him an offer privately<<<

As a bid is already in place, this is unethical as there is now a contract
of sale, you should only break that by offerring more at auction. If there
have been no bids, by all means email the seller, who may cancel the auction
and sell privately to you. Although he has ebay fees.

OR

If there are no bids, or bids fail to meet reserve, by all means email and
offer to purchase which is then outside of ebay. Or email before closure
and suggest that if no sale, will agree to purchase. Then the seller has
options should the high bidder reneg or not meet reserve.

I have done the later with success when my high bid has not reached reserve
and struck an agreeable final price.

go for it, be patient?
let the heart shout,
tell the mind to constrain
