Your 500 F8 has an adaptall-2 mount, yes? check that it's fitted to the
lens body correctly. There's a funny little linkage that couples to the
aperture on variable aperture lenses and fits into one specific place on
fixed aperture lenses. IIRC it's possible to fit the adaptall-2 to the
lens with this in the wrong position, resulting in the symptoms you
describe.
