: A friend of mine has offered to sell me a Vivitar Series 1 28-90 MM 2.8 -
: 3.5 macro lens. The lens is in perfect condition and doesn't look like it
: has ever been used. I'm not sure how old it is but it still has the old
: "passed" sticker on it. Probably made in the late 70's or early 80's.
: Anyway, is anyone familiar with this lens? I know some of the Vivitar
lenses
: are good some not so good. He told me I could have the lens for what ever
: amount I thought was fair. I don't know how much to offer him and I can't
: find anything about the lens at Photodo. Thanks for the advice.

This is a very fine lens. It's not a macro lens, but offers 'macro focusing'
(a marketing term; "close focusing" is better) at the short zoom range,
which is not very common. It reaches 23cm at the 28mm zoom position (1:6).
This is quite nice compared to a fixed focal length 28mm lens that reaches
30cm (1:8).

There are three minor disadvantages that you have to learn to live with: its
weight (680g), its non-Oly compatible filter size (67mm) and its varifocal
design (focus shifts with zoom). Its close focusing option, high speed
(albeit not contant), good quality and most versatile zoom range (28mm
included!) make it all a very good investment.

I paid $150 for mine, but then, the dealer was not a friend...
