Hi,

I've been looking for a while for a cheap slide scanner and finally found
one:
The Agfa Snapscan 50e.
It is a flatbed scanner that includes illumination from the top also,
although only for 35 mm film. The optical resolution is 2400 (v) by 1200 (h)
DPI, enough for webpages or even 6x4" prints. The colourdepth is 42 bits. I
paid 585 guilder, about $230, for it.
How good is it? Of course, it is not good enough for archives, but in my
opinion a 2700 DPI Nikon Coolscan is not enough for archives either. That's
why I was not interested in such an expensive Coolscan: an overkill for
webpages, not good enough for archives. The Agfa, however, is great for
webpages and small prints.
Here are some examples of slides, scanned at 1200 DPI (about 1600 by 1100
pixels) and reduced in size to about 800 by 550 pixels. They are jpeg
compressed to about 50 kb:

An "ordinary" macro picture (Zuiko 50 mm F3.5 at F11, T20 flash, OM40,
kodachrome 64):

An astronomy picture (1950 mm F3.8 (non Zuiko ;-) ), OM1, ektachrome 400):

Even at high resolution (2400 DPI) no separate RGB pixels are visible! A
problem common to (very) cheap scanners.

And on this picture you see the scanner has some problems when the slide is
not completely flat (Zuiko 35 mm F2 at F5.6, OM40, kodachrome 25):

The edges of the picture are darker than the center, which is definitely not
caused by the Zuiko!

So if you are looking for a cheap scanner for slides, negatives and ordinary
pictures (it is a A4 flatbed!) this is a good buy.

Bye,

Erwin Voogt
