Almost makes me feel like hollering "night phtographers of the world
unite" Fact of the matter is I guess camera companies make cameras for the money, not for the photographer.

Yes, and I've also found it strange that at least two compacts from the
'80s, the XA and the Minox 35GL, had long auto speeds too, yet no modern
compact zoom that I know of has more than a second or two available for low
light situations.

I used to like night photography in shopping areas, where the wide variety
of lit window displays made for interesting pictures. Now there's not much
point in taking a camera out round here at night except for studies of
street lighting bouncing off metal window shutters.
