If you have a microphone with two plugs on it (one larger and the other
smaller), the smaller one is hooked up to the on/off switch on the microphone.
"Professional" microphones with an on/off switch disconnect the sound circuit,
but on small microphones with two plugs the circuits are separate. What it
does is disconnect the motor in the tape recorder, providing a cheap "pause"
control. So you should be in no danger of ruining the mike. I don't know if
Radio Shack still sells them, but they used to have a separate remote switch
for this application. Just a slide switch in a small box, with a cord and the
correct size plug.
