AFAIK this is
an updated version of the "slow AF" iS-1 with improved macro capability
and remote
control possibility with the M. Remote Cords. Don't you know anyone with
an iS-3
so that you can compare the AF speed of the two? >>

I have very few AF datapoints to compare with here. I have played with
the "wonderbricks" in stores but never actually went out and shot with
one. When the OM77 first came out I got one for my (now ex) wife as a
point and shoot. That was _slow_! I have an IS-10 that is not very fast
at all...this is what I can make the comparison with best, the IS-2 has
_much_ faster AF than my IS-10. Where I am really impressed with the
IS-2 is the ability to focus through glass and it doesn't seem to get
tripped up easily. I got to run some rolls through it over our vacation
and am very impressed with the results!

<< Could it be that there is less play in the iS-1 and iS-2 zoom lenses
than there is
in the lens of the iS-3? According to an earlier post by John H Oly had
to reduce
camera weight in the iS-3 by replacing some metal parts in the floating
cam focus
system by plastic one's... >>

Again, my only comparison here is with my IS-10 which I bought new as a
family point and shoot. There is a distinct difference between these two
lenses (IS-2 and -10) mechanical "tightness" but I can't comment on the
differneces between IS-1, 2 and 3 since I don't own 'em all.

<< Don't have any personal experience of the iS-1 or iS-2, but as far as
the
iS-3000/G40 combo this is an awesome piece of machinery which gives you
lots of
interesting flash modes (and flash power!). All iS/L converters are high
quality 2
or 3-element achromatic lenses, and they should not be mixed up with the
many
cheaply built front adapters for camcorders. An extra bonus with the
iS/L lenses
is that, contrary to ordinary teleconverters, they have virtually no
negative
effect on overall lens speed. I don't know if you're aware of the iS
page at Hans'
e-Sif site, but this is THE PLACE to go if you're interested in Oly's iS
cameras.

I sorta knew all this, but it is nice to hear it echo'ed. I am aware of
the IS site and visitied it quite a bit after deciding to buy this IS-2
(which was on a whim cuz it was cheap, though not as cheap as the one
Susan picked up, now I am _very_ glad I got it...). Now I need to find a
deal on a G-40 (good luck from what I can tell so far...maybe that
"bargain" condition at KEH will fit the bill).

No doubts I will get some very strange looks from other photographers
when I use a "point and shoot" where they are all using "wonderbricks"
but I am now quite confident this camera will do what I ask of it in
paddock areas, pit lane, and at car shows. Too bad Olympus doesn't do a
"Ti" version of the IS series...

Thanks for the comments Per!
