: Following the Olympus doc's and the list's recommendation I have obtained a
1-11
and a 1-12
: screens for macro work. The Oly instructions say to focus the varimagni on the
screen and then
: 'bring the specimen(spaceman) into focus'. What do the paired tic lines on the
screen do? What is
: the in focus/out of focus indication, particularly with the 1-12?

The clear screen produces an areal image which is impossible to properly focus
on.
What looks razor sharp to the eye could in fact be an image that's projected
underneath or above the screen, which means your eyes have 'drifted away' (=are
not focused anymore on the screen). This is the function of the cross-hairs: you
must constantly force yourself to keep the double cross-hairs sharply in focus,
with the double lines clearly separated, and compare this to the air image
that's
produced on the rest of the screen. If both are sharply focused, it means your
eyes are calibrated and overall focus is ok. Sometimes you may loose the focus
of
the cross-hairs and than it can help to move your eyes away from the viewfinder
for a couple of seconds and look elsewhere. You really don't need the Varimagni
Finder with these screens unless you need its variable diopter. Its
magnification
can help to make focus easier to determine but its loss of light can work
against
you and the reversal of left and right isn't very comfortable either.
