There was a time, back in the late '60s or early '70s when VW racing
took place in the Potomac River.  Drivers had to enter and exit under
the car's own power.  A propeller was added to the pulley on the
crankshaft.  Drivers wore fire suits as the river sometimes caught on
fire, and the cars were caulked to keep water out.
