Hi Mike,
I have recently bought an AutoEye manual on eBay, which matches my AutoEye!
It sounds as though you must have the Flashmatic dial (on the left side of
the lens) on something other than "A". The automatic feature only works on
"A".
If this doesn't help, let me know.
