Dave,
The collar should be installed so that the red dot points towards the camera
body. The idea here is that you remove the collar by first matching up the
collar's red dot with the red dot on the lens flange (usually a 180 degree
turn), then pulling it off towards the rear.
In other words, the long side of the tripod foot points towards the front.
