Since I started this thread I thought I'd better report back. After
consuming all the advice, and considering the ways I wanted to use it, I
decided on the Bogen 3401 (which I hadn't known existed) and the 308RC
ball head (when I previously hadn't considered a ball head... thought it
would be too flimsy). Purchased in a local store for USD 173.94.
Haven't had a chance to use it yet. My only comment so far: It ain't
light! The first thing I did was give myself a non-trivial sprain to my
left forearm trying to _whip_ it out of its box last night. I won't be
repeating that trick again.
