I received a package from the US by UPS, and they wanted to charge me 30
UKP for "service charges" in addition to import duty (which in this case
was zero). There was no prior warning of this so I suggested what they
could do with the idea, in the nicest possible way, and they relented. I'd
recommend regualr air mail as well. It might take a little longer but it's
potentially a *lot* cheaper.
