The M.18V Control Grip is released by pushing the release button (above the
shutter release on the grip) in, down, and in again, in kind of a Z-shaped
track. (In is toward the back of the camera, and down is toward the bottom
of the grip.)
It's foolproof once you know how to work it, but hard to figure out...
