Cleaning marks and other fine scratches on a front element that degrade the
image can be helped by wiping it over with a tiny smear of matt black poster
paint on a cloth so that it works into the scratches. Light scratches
scatter the
light, cause flare and reduce contrast. The damage has to be worse than a
few
cleaning scratches to have a noticeable effect on resolution.
