On my backpacking tripod I use a ballhead that was origionally intended for
strobelights. Go to your local pro camera store and take a look at the
studio lighting equipment. I use the largest model that has a ball of
about 1.25" diameter. The whole unit is about two inches wide and has a
single knob for locking it in position. I successfully use it with lenses
up to 200mm. Best of all, it works great with strobes too. <g>
