[OM] Nodal Points

For those of you doing or contemplating immersive or panorama photography,
I've compiled the following nodal measurements, using the Kaidan KIWI
tripod head. Measurments are from the tripod mounting screw, according to
Kaidan.

left-right nodal offset:

OM-4: 31mm
(I believe other single-digit OMs are the same.)
Bogen 3270/3271 quick release: +18mm
Winder 1: +34mm
(I believe Winder 2 is the same.)
Motor Drive 2: +19mm
Motor Drive 2 with M.15 battery: +46mm

To determine your left-right alignment, take the 31mm for the body, and add
the incremental distances for other items in use.

For example, OM-4 with Winder and 3270 QR will be 31+34+18: 83mm.

front-back nodal offset:

16/3.5 fisheye: 55mm
18/3.5: 62mm
24/2.8 55mm
24/3.5 shift: 77mm
28/2: 62mm
35/2: 54
35/2.8 shift: 78
40/2: 49mm
50/3.5 macro: 44
80/4 macro with 25mm extension tube: 67mm
90/2 macro: 40mm

All measures were on Zuiko lenses at infinity, and are approximate. Some
lenses seemed to be more particular than others. The longer the lens, the
less critical the measurement, in general. For example, I could tell the
90/2 was out when set to either end of the scale, but I probably couldn't
tell the difference between 30mm and 50mm. On the other hand, the 24mm
shift was particularly sensitive -- set that puppy to 79 or 75, and you can
tell the difference.

It's interesting to note how the lens design impacts the nodal point. I had
read that the nodal point would be equal to the length of the lens, offset
from the film plane -- nothing could be further from the truth! The 50/3.5
was the only one even close to that rule-of-thumb! It's interesting that
the 18/3.5 nodal point is actually IN FRONT of the front element!
