Fungi exist in two forms. They grow when conditions are ideal - right
temperature,
humidity, nutrients. When things are not ideal, they form spores - sort of
like having a trutle retract into its shell when it is threatened. This is
like a "seed" that sprouts when things are better, forming hyphae-the branched
forms we see in the lenses.

Having hyphal elements in there might mean that some spores also exist and have
not sprouted yet. These are harder to see/remove. Maybe that's what the man
in the camera shop meant.

In practice, spores are everywhere - in all kinds of climates - though in
varying
numbers and species. If the lenses are kept in the same way as they were before
the infection set in, then it can happen again, even if the lenses were
completely
cleaned.
