If I may differ, an entire element was eliminated.  That particular element
was as convex and thin as a typical second element in a wide angle or super
wide angle lens.  Based on that element alone, I've not seen a short telephoto
design as radical from the 1970's.  I'm certainly open to anyone who can find
one.
