Olympus NiCd equipment is pretty badly done, in my opinion. One of the worst
aspects of the OM system. The packs are bizarre proprietary designs with no
alternate suppliers once Olympus drops support. The have a lot of cells in
series (which makes cells prone to reverse charging) with no access to
individual cells. The cells cannot be replaced easily. (Why should you have
to disassemble a contol switch assembly to replace cells in a motor drive
pack?) The chargers are dumb: they just pump current in without monitoring
the state of the batteries, so they can damage the packs by overcharging.
The powered equipment doesn't monitor the state of the packs; so they can
overdischarge, resulting in individual cells getting reverse charged and
ruined. (which then of course, as I mentioned are hard to change.)
