Ok!  I'll bite.
A shoot through and a silver reflector are 2 different animals.
To make a long story short, the silver umbrellas are opaque.  There is no
loss of light through the back.  A shoot through loses a lot of light that
is bounced back without going through the umb...brollie.
The same goes for the type with removable black backing. some light goes
through
 the transparent white satin and is not returned by the black backing.
For the most light, use a completely opaque brollie.

As for how close, I use a portable studio setup with 120W/S Max.
For a head shot 3 feet is plenty far away.
