 Based on your description, knob-on-the-left would seem to be the variety
 that I have.  In my Lens Handbook from the purchase of my 50mm 1.4 waaaayyy
 back in 1982, the picture of the 300mm lens shows the knob on the right,
 which confused the dickens out of me.  Obviously, that lens (or at least
 the tripod ring) is of the older variety.

Yep, the pictures in various literature is confusion.  Just for reference,
"The OM System Lens Handbook" ed 1885 picture shows the knob on the left.
What is even more confusing, I bought my 85-250 f5 zoom new in about 1987-88.
It has the knob on the right indicating possibly is was old stock from the
early 1980s.
I changed it out with one on the left, much more convenient.
Who Knows!
