I do defer to the resident Canon MF expert here.  But It's not retro but
advanced thinking by Olympus.  Even Nikon's advanced matrix metering doesn't
give you the ability to previsualize where your shadows and highlights will
fall with a graphic demonstration like the OM3 & 4.  The Nikon manual even
says not to rely on the 3D Matrix in extremely backlit situations but to use
the spotmeter.  Others mfrs. are still on the upslope of the learning curve.
