[OM] scanning resolution (was HCB - OM eqivalent to Leica M + 35/2?)

I recently acquired an HP photosmart scanner and printer. Scanning at 300
dpi, full frame 8x10 enlargements are indistinguishable from traditional
silver/chemical prints of the same negative. I may never get my hands wet
printing again. The HP unit represents the low end of the market with a max
resoultion of 2400 dpi. Both Nikon and Polaroid offer scanners with much
more impressive specifications(and price tags!), 2700 dpi and more software
control for example, but the small HP unit is more than satisfactory for my
purposes.

Can anyone tell me if using a 1400dpi scan from a Nikon coolscan
is sufficient for 4 colour glossy printing at about 6x9" size?
