I corresponded with Tokina about a similar problem with one of their lenses.
Their rep said that a replacement may not work properly. They have to test
the assembled lens to determine if the particular part will work properly.
This came about because they had only one or two elements left for the
particular lens I had. I don't know if this is true of all lenses and makes,
but it is food for thought. This is not something your local camera shop can
do. John H. is right about the ball bearings. I know the book says 370, but
it looks like they left off a few zeros. Be sure you are VERY relaxed with
lots of time when reassemble time comes. This lens has some very tiny
plastic cams that are easily damaged from impact. They also come in a couple
of sizes and must be fitted to the particular lens.
