P.S.  Oops, sorry I left you out, Ian.  These filters have clear centers but
gradually get greyer (a neutral density increase) towards the periphery of the
filter.  They correct for an optical fact of life that you get a progressively
increasing falloff of illumination of light projected by a lens as you look
closer and closer to the edges of the field of illumination.  This is more and
more pronounced with an increasing angle of view of the lens.  Hence, a wide
angle typically has more fall off than a normal lens.

I suspect we have a case of vignetting going on here in the new 35-70mm S
Zuiko?  Perhaps our optical experts on the list can illuminate us on that?
