Hi all:
I can't find the thread that asked about the Vivitar Series 1 100 to 500mm
f/5.6-8 lens. But, recalling a question about the "quality" of it, I found a
Popular Photography SQF lens test on this lens. Here are the results:
SQF for Vivitar Series 1: 100 - 500mm f/5.6-8 @ 22x magnification
@100mm / 300 / 500mm settings
f/5.6 = 75.5 / NA / NA
f/6.7 = not tested / 61.2 / NA
f/8 = 82.1 / 63.6 / 45.7
f/11 = 83.2 / 65.3 / 53.2
f/16 = 81.3 / 62.2 / 50.1
f/22 = 71.8 / 51.8 / 42.2
f/32 = 58.2 / 39.2 / 32.2
It goes to (a non-recommended!) 1:5 "macro" at 500 mm only. Considered
outstanding performance at 100 mm, average at 300 and 500 mm. Nominal
distortion at 100 and 500 and none at 300mm. Flare evident throughout range
lowering contrast.
