I'm sure we all can look at the specs on various lenses and say "gee, the
zoom ain't as good as the xx prime lens.  In reality, sharpness of the
glass has little to do with it these days.  Film (grain), vibration and
stopping down too much will affect sharpness more than overall lens design.
 When dealing with longer focal length lenses, yes, there is a difference,
but most any zoom in the sub-150mm range ought to be plenty sharp and
capable of blowing up to any size enlargement.

That said, I prefer fixed length lenses for most of my work, but the ATX
35-70/2.8 is probably a bit "sharper" than my 50/1.4.
