Hi Paul:

We just covered this very question in depth. To summarize:
The f/3.6 Zuiko beats out the f/3.5~4.5 and f/4.0, which are close in quality.
Gary S. says is 3.5~4.5 is a hair better, but I'd say significantly better,
although mechnically my f/4.0 has always been loose (despite OLY repair),
which might explain my opinion.

The 3.5~4.5 is one of the petitist zooms I know of. And it focuses down to
1/3 meter. It was made by Tokina and a differently marked lenses was marketed
by them, also. I'm pleased with the quality so far, although *one* list
members has one that seems to distort at the 35 mm setting. I'd be hard
pressed to chose between this and a 50 mm f/2.0 macro as THE lens to be on a
desert island with.

The 3.5~4.5 is earning its bread and butter for me as a preview lens for 4x5
shooting, as well as snapshots. I can determine the lens I'll need for a 4x5
by the zoom setting. Downsides are the variable aperture, which only seems to
vary when wide open (I still haven't quite figured that one out), and it's
mighty dark in the viewfinder when shooting dim scenes. It takes some getting
used to to tell the difference between the controls, but I'm getting the hang
of it after a month of frequent shooting. Just taxes the typical OLY user's
fine motor skills.
