Interestingly, I just finished speaking with a tech at PhotoSphere in Dallas
regarding the same thing.  He explained to me that they have had a number of
"AA" powered devices failing.  His explanation is the tension in the springs
is strong enough to bend/break the aging plastic in winders, flash units,
etc.  The T-32 is particularly vulnerable he said (I specifically asked
about those.)  The moral of the story is, take the batteries out when not in
use.  Not only to eliminate the possibility of damage from leaky batteries,
but to avoid damaging the plastic itself.
