I find that taking a random approach breaks up the boredom of lens
cleaning. I also introduce various sized particles of grit to create
Spirograph-like patterns on the glass. With practice, I have found that
I can actually leave a lens dirtier than when I started. This means that
there is always a good reason to spend lots of time fiddling with lenses
instead of actually photographing anything.
