You can make fine astro photos from the equipment listed. All you really
need is some good dark skies, a lot of patience and a means to track the
stars across the sky. I recommend "Astrophotography" by Barry Gordon as an
excellent reference. The maximum duration of open shutter for a stationary
camera depends on two major factors - focal length and the latitude of your
location. Assuming a latitude near 50 degrees, then:
focal length max. duration
28 38 sec
50 21 sec
135 7.9 sec
400 2.7 sec
The max duration decreases as you near the equator and increases closer to
the poles. Inexpensive devices called "barn doors" are easily fabricated to
move with the sky and track star movement. Accurately aligned, you can keep
the shutter open almost indefinitely. I have made successful astro photos
using focal lengths from 28mm to 2800 mm. Enjoy
